Analyzing workouts more effectively, making sense of smartwatch data, and receiving intelligent guidance during athletic preparation: this is the mission of Runvia, a free Italian Android application created for runners of all levels—from beginners to marathoners and ultra-trail enthusiasts.
Runvia is a project developed by Fabio Barbieri, an Italian developer and runner. It was born out of the practical need to turn the massive amount of data generated during a run into truly actionable insights for training.
While GPS devices and smartwatches collect numerous metrics—pace, heart rate, cadence, elevation gain, and workload—interpreting them effectively can be challenging. Runvia bridges this gap by offering advanced analytical tools typically restricted to professional platforms.
At the core of Runvia is the AI Coach, a virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence that interacts directly with the runner's training log.
The AI Coach is capable of:
Analyzing completed workouts.
Interpreting FIT and TCX files, as well as activity screenshots.
Explaining technical parameters such as cardiac drift, pacing strategy, and effort distribution.
Suggesting training plan adjustments based on goals, accumulated fatigue, and activity history.
Guiding runners through race preparations ranging from 5k events to marathons and ultra-trails.
Rather than replacing a professional human coach, the app aims to provide runners with an accessible, on-demand support tool to help them better understand their training journey.
Runvia adopts a unique model compared to standard AI-driven applications.
Following a free trial phase of the AI Coach, users can continue using the service by configuring their own free personal Gemini API Key.
This design choice rests on two core principles:
Privacy & Transparency: Users retain direct control over their AI configuration, avoiding a proprietary system that collects and stores private coach conversations on external servers.
Accessibility: The core features of the app remain free, enabling runners to access advanced tools without mandatory subscription fees or recurring costs.
Beyond the AI Coach, Runvia includes a comprehensive suite of training management tools:
Live GPS Tracking with interactive mapping.
Real-time Voice Guidance powered by text-to-speech.
Training Workload Monitoring.
ACWR Calculation (Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio) to balance recent vs. habitual training loads.
Daily Readiness Indicator.
Fitness Trend Analysis across 28-day and 90-day periods.
These features empower runners to balance effort, recovery, and overall progression.
Runvia seamlessly connects with the tools runners already rely on:
Strava Synchronization.
Health Connect Support.
Activity Import via FIT and TCX files.
A standout feature automatically attaches an AI-generated technical analysis directly to Strava activity comments. Direct integrations with Garmin Connect and Suunto are currently under active development.
Developed as a project without external corporate backing or investor funding, Runvia receives continuous updates shaped by user feedback. It has already surpassed 1,000 downloads while maintaining an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars on the Google Play Store.
"As a runner, I realized we collect a massive amount of data, but often lack the means to interpret it properly," says developer Fabio Barbieri. "I created Runvia to translate those numbers into simple, useful insights, making tools available to everyone that would normally require professional platforms."
